Murder in the Cathedral by T.S. Elliot
Directed by David Kemp and our entry into the Kent Drama Festival
T S
Eliot’s masterpiece, Murder in the Cathedral, was written in 1935
and first performed in Canterbury Cathedral. It tells the well-known story of
Archbishop Thomas Becket who was killed by four knights on the orders of King
Henry II in December 1170. But the play might be sub-titled “Who killed Becket?”
Clearly the knights had something to do with it but was the king ultimately
responsible? Or did Becket himself arrange his death in order to become a
martyr?
Through
the play a chorus of women of Canterbury, in the style of a Greek chorus, set
the tone and commentate on the action. A group of priests find themselves
caught up in the frightening events whilst Becket himself struggles with the
temptations of political and spiritual power. The knights prefer actions to
words and the play reaches its inevitable conclusion – but the questions
remain.
This new
production makes full use of the Little Theatre’s limited space and the
audience can be assured of an experience in which they can be intimately
involved.
